Earth Overshoot Day – the day in the year by which we have used all the resources that Planet Earth can produce in one year – is coming earlier every year. It is time to start conserving the planet instead of depleting it. That means we need think about how to adjust production processes to cope with the changing climate. We need to minimise greenhouse gas emissions from the production of food, feed and biomass. We need to slow down until we can start conserving the planet again.
That is the essence of the Circular and Climate-Neutral Knowlegde Base programme, which Saskia Visser has headed over the past few years.
“The programme provides support for the transition to a circular and climate-neutral society. Researchers investigate new ways of linking different production processes, for example for production in greenhouses, manure management, marine production and valorising biomass. By finding such new connections and studying the management of this transition, we can make efficient use of the available resources, store carbon and enable people to have a good life.”
In this chapter two projects are highlighted to illustrate the important work of the KB-programme Circular and Climate Neutral.
